Detective Mode Community User Contributions Toiletly News Accessibility

Today we're launching one of the biggest community features in Toiletly so far: Detective Mode.

Toiletly has always relied on the community to keep toilet information accurate and up to date. Every time somebody reports a new toilet, updates accessibility information, or corrects opening hours, they're helping thousands of people who rely on accurate information when they're away from home.

But keeping toilet data current is a huge challenge.

Toilets open. Toilets close. Businesses change ownership. Access rules change. Facilities are upgraded. Councils update locations. Information that was accurate six months ago may no longer be accurate today.

That's where Detective Mode comes in.

What is Detective Mode?

Detective Mode allows registered Toiletly members to help investigate toilets that have been reported but don't yet have enough information to appear on the main map.

These locations may be missing important details such as opening hours, accessibility information, access requirements, baby changing facilities, or other information needed before they can be confidently added to the live map.

When Detective Mode is enabled, the map switches to show these unverified reports instead of confirmed toilets.

Tap a location, review the information we already have, and if you're able to visit or verify the details, submit your findings to help complete the case.

Over 25,000 investigations waiting

At launch, Detective Mode contains 25,081 reported toilet locations that need further investigation.

Some may only need a handful of additional details. Others may need a local community member to confirm the information we already have. Every approved contribution helps improve the quality of the map and increases the chances of a toilet becoming available to everyone.

This is one of the largest community verification projects we've undertaken since launching Toiletly.

Earn XP for helping

Detective Mode isn't just about improving the map. It's also a new way to contribute to the Toiletly community.

Approved submissions earn the usual contribution XP, and users who help move a toilet from unverified to confirmed can earn additional rewards.

Whether you're checking opening hours at your local café, confirming accessibility information at a public facility, or helping fill in missing details while you're out and about, every contribution helps.

Why this matters

Toiletly exists to help people find toilets when they need them most.

For parents with young children, people living with medical conditions, disabled users, travellers, delivery drivers, and countless others, accurate information matters.

The best way to maintain that accuracy isn't through a small central team. It's through local knowledge from people who use these facilities every day.

Detective Mode gives our community a direct way to contribute to that mission.

Ready to investigate?

If you're already registered, simply open Toiletly and switch on Detective Mode from the map screen.

If you don't yet have an account, now is the perfect time to join the community and help build the UK's most accurate toilet map.

25,081 toilet reports are waiting for investigation.

Every approved contribution helps bring more toilets onto the map and makes Toiletly more useful for everyone.

The Hidden Flaws in the UK’s Community Toilet Scheme

The Community Toilet Scheme was meant to solve Britain’s public loo crisis — but poor visibility, minimal support, and weak promotion have left most people unaware it exists. While councils list venues online and hand out small stickers, few ever notice. Toiletly offers a smarter, modern alternative: free listings, clear signage, and in-app incentives that finally make the scheme work for everyone.

UK Council-run Public Toilets: A Decline and What It Means

Across the UK, hundreds of council-run public toilets have quietly vanished — victims of funding cuts, vandalism, and a lack of statutory protection. What began as a proud Victorian innovation is now an overlooked crisis of dignity and accessibility. From older people trapped by the “loo leash” to tourists avoiding town centres, Britain’s shrinking toilet network tells a wider story about how we value public space — and who it’s really for.
