Stoma Colostomy Accessibility

We’re proud to announce an important step forward for accessibility: Toiletly now helps people find stoma-friendly toilets in the UK.

Our latest update introduces a brand-new Stoma-Friendly filter across the Toiletly platform. Users can now easily find toilets that support people living with a stoma — and contribute to the community by marking facilities as stoma-friendly themselves.

The new feature is available across the entire Toiletly ecosystem, including our website, progressive web app, Android app and iOS app. It means that anyone living with a stoma can now search specifically for facilities designed to meet their needs, helping them plan journeys with confidence and dignity.

What Is a Stoma?

A stoma is a surgically created opening on the abdomen that allows waste to leave the body and be collected in an external bag. Stomas are commonly formed after surgery relating to bowel conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, cancer, or other medical conditions.

In the UK alone, it’s estimated that more than 200,000 people live with a stoma. [1]

For many people with a stoma, access to appropriate toilet facilities is essential for daily life. A lack of suitable facilities can make travel, shopping, and social activities stressful or even impossible. Charities such as Colostomy UK have long highlighted that accessible, well-designed toilets can make a huge difference to quality of life. [1]

What Makes a Toilet Stoma-Friendly?

A stoma-friendly toilet doesn’t necessarily require major redesign — but a few thoughtful features can dramatically improve usability.

  • A hook for hanging clothing or bags
  • A shelf or flat surface for medical supplies
  • A mirror inside the cubicle so users can clearly see their stoma and bag
  • A disposal bin inside the cubicle
  • Enough space and privacy to manage stoma care comfortably

These small changes can significantly reduce anxiety and allow people to manage their stoma with dignity and independence.

A Fantastic Step Forward from B&Q

Recently, B&Q announced the rollout of stoma-friendly toilets across its stores nationwide, to ensure facilities meet the needs of people living with a stoma. [1]

Their upgraded facilities include practical additions such as hooks, mirrors, shelves and disposal bins within toilet cubicles — simple but impactful improvements that allow people to manage their stoma more comfortably.

Following this fantastic initiative, we’ve added all B&Q stores with stoma-friendly facilities to Toiletly, making it even easier for users to locate them across the UK.

Finding Stoma-Friendly Toilets with Toiletly

With this update, Toiletly becomes the only UK toilet-finding platform currently offering a dedicated stoma-friendly search filter.

Our users can now:

  • Filter toilets on the map by “Stoma Friendly”
  • Mark toilets as stoma friendly when adding or editing listings
  • View facilities on our website, web app, Android and iOS apps
  • Help build the UK’s most comprehensive database of accessible toilets

Where Can I Find Stoma-Friendly Toilets in the UK?

One of the most common questions people living with a stoma ask is simple: “Where can I find a stoma-friendly toilet near me?”

Until recently, there hasn’t been an easy answer. While some organisations maintain lists of accessible facilities, they are often difficult to search or limited to specific locations.

Toiletly changes that by bringing stoma-friendly facilities into a modern, searchable map. Using our Stoma-Friendly filter, users can instantly locate toilets that provide the features needed to manage a stoma safely and comfortably — anywhere in the UK.

Why Stoma-Friendly Toilets Matter

For many people living with a stoma, the availability of suitable toilet facilities determines whether they feel comfortable leaving home. Without access to appropriate facilities, everyday activities like shopping, travelling or visiting friends can become stressful.

Simple features such as shelves, mirrors and disposal bins may seem minor, but they dramatically improve independence and dignity for stoma users. Increasing awareness of stoma-friendly toilets is therefore not just about convenience — it’s about accessibility, confidence and inclusion.

How Businesses Can Become Stoma-Friendly

Becoming a stoma-friendly venue does not usually require expensive renovations. In many cases, a few thoughtful additions can make a huge difference for customers living with a stoma.

  • Install a hook for hanging clothing or bags
  • Add a shelf or flat surface for medical supplies
  • Provide a mirror inside the cubicle
  • Ensure there is a disposal bin within the cubicle
  • Provide enough space and privacy for comfortable use

Businesses that make these small improvements can support their communities while welcoming a wider range of customers.

How Toiletly Helps Build a More Accessible UK

Toiletly already provides the UK’s fastest-growing toilet directory, with thousands of daily Google search impressions and growing awareness across the country.

Our platform goes beyond basic toilet listings by providing rich facility information including:

  • Accessibility information
  • Changing Places facilities
  • Baby change availability
  • Sanitary disposal
  • Men’s disposal units
  • Showers
  • Drinking water access
  • User ratings, reviews and photos

The addition of stoma-friendly facilities is another step toward our mission: making sure everyone can find a toilet when they need one.

Help Us Build the UK’s Stoma-Friendly Map

Toiletly’s stoma-friendly filter is only the beginning. Our goal is to build the most complete map of stoma-friendly toilets in the UK — and our community can help make it happen.

If you discover a toilet that supports people living with a stoma, you can mark it as Stoma-Friendly when adding or editing a listing on Toiletly.

Every contribution helps someone else plan their day with confidence. Together we can create a nationwide network of accessible facilities that makes everyday life easier for people living with a stoma.

The Hidden Flaws in the UK’s Community Toilet Scheme

The Community Toilet Scheme was meant to solve Britain’s public loo crisis — but poor visibility, minimal support, and weak promotion have left most people unaware it exists. While councils list venues online and hand out small stickers, few ever notice. Toiletly offers a smarter, modern alternative: free listings, clear signage, and in-app incentives that finally make the scheme work for everyone.

UK Council-run Public Toilets: A Decline and What It Means

Across the UK, hundreds of council-run public toilets have quietly vanished — victims of funding cuts, vandalism, and a lack of statutory protection. What began as a proud Victorian innovation is now an overlooked crisis of dignity and accessibility. From older people trapped by the “loo leash” to tourists avoiding town centres, Britain’s shrinking toilet network tells a wider story about how we value public space — and who it’s really for.
